Socialism

People always claim that socialism is a failed system.

Can somebody name a country (in recent times) which attempted socialism as a form of government/economy which was even allowed to succeed?

It seems to me that in each instance the capitalists attacked, sanctioned and/or financed opposition and insurrection within a country.

Why didn't the capitalists simply allow the socialists to fail on their own if it was so prone to failure?

I'm beginning to think that socialism was a real threat to the capitalist system .... and any success of socialism undermined the capitalist propaganda.
