Mapping the Financial System

Is anyone aware of work done to “map” the financial system? I found what looks to be an interesting paper here, but the terminology (and, therefore, topology) of the map seems transaction-driven instead of institution-driven.  I think an institution-driven mapping of financial networks would be more informative for understanding the state of capital.

Agreed. Such institutional mapping — particularly when quantified — would be highly useful. Creating it, though, would require expert familiarity with the financial process.
